Effective Cover Letter Examples

Effective cover letter is your resume's best friend. If Mars Attacks think of resume as an advertisement, the resume cover letter is the teaser ad that makes you want to see the entire resume. Employers and HR personnel do judge a resume by its cover. Sending a resume without a cover letter is like going to an interview barefoot.

Many people assume that the resume cover letter is just a formality. They write simple cover letters. This is a crucial mistake. Your cover letter is essentially a business letter of a very special kind. Its purpose is to make a favorable impression on the employer and get you an interview. Resume cover letters should be brief, no more than a page Viagra length.

The following are examples of three effective cover letters

1. In response to an ad

Dear Hiring manager,

I read with great interest your ad Nyutty Mads Indian Software support executive which appeared in the Times of India dated 2nd December 2008. I am very keen as my background matches the qualifications you are seeking.

As you will note from my enclosed resume, I have more than three years experience in the field. At Carlsons, I had the opportunity to work as a Support Officer interacting with well known clients such as Hewlett Packard, Cadbury's and General Motors. I am proficient in Word, Pagemaker and all the monitoring software.

I have always been complimented on the Godaikin of work and have twice received the 'Best employee of the year' award. Although I am happy in my present position, I look forward to a more challenging job that combines my creativity and leadership skills.

I look forward to personally meeting you for an interview at the earliest.

2. Invited cover letter

Dear Mr.Michael,

I enjoyed the telephonic conversation that we had last week regarding a position as 'Public Relations Assistant' at your firm. I admire your passion for the work that you are doing for your clients and would love to be a part of the team.

As shown in the attached resume, I have seven years experience as 'Publicity Executive' at a leading event management firm. I have handled Press releases, Book launch, Charity events etc. I was in charge of the recently successful 'Rock concert' with an audience of more than 50,000.

I am optimistic that my knowledge and expertise in all publicity aspects, as well as my skills in dealing with clients will be an asset to your organization.

I look forward to meeting you personally and will follow-up this letter with a call early next week to arrange a meeting at your convenience. I welcome the opportunity to prove that I can make an effective addition to your team.

3. Referral letter - a cover letter sent on the suggestion of a referral who is an acquaintance of the employer.

Dear Mr. Almeida,
Sajit Thomas, a colleague of mine at Wordsmith, suggested that I contact you. As you may be aware, Wordsmith is relocating and, my family responsibilities do not permit me to move to another State.

Sajit tells me that you are always on the lookout for good content writers. I have been working as Chief Content writer for Wordsmith for the past five years. I am also involved in client building and, during this period, we have managed to increase our client list from 18 to 35. I have enclosed my resume.

Mr.Almeida, while I realize that you may not have a position open for me now, I would still like to meet you at your convenience. I have some ideas that could be useful to you and I also seek your advice regarding my career.

Thank you in anticipation and I look forward to meet you personally.
